When Things Look Good... But Feel Off
Time to Read: 4 mins
It’s a strange thing when life looks good on the outside…
… but quietly feels out of sync on the inside.
For years, I’ve had the same Sunday ritual.
I pull out my planner, reflect on the past week, and set my goals for the week ahead.
It’s usually one of my favorite moments because it’s a chance to pause, regroup, and step into Monday feeling clear and focused.
But a few Sundays ago, something felt… off.
I wasn’t burnt out or overwhelmed.
I was just… off.
And as I looked back on the previous week, I suddenly realized... it hadn’t been all that productive.
Now, you would think this flicker of awareness would've made me more mindful. But no.
I lost Monday to tasks that didn’t really matter (like obsessing over a color palette for slides), while avoiding the real work that was waiting for me.
It wasn’t until later that evening that it finally hit me:
I felt off because my actions weren’t aligned with the work I care about most.
I wasn’t engaged in activities that help people lead themselves so they can create real impact in their lives and careers.
Instead, I’d slipped into “busy work” at the expense of meaningful work.
No drama. No meltdown. Just quiet misalignment.
And that’s the sneaky part:
Misalignment doesn’t always show up as chaos.
Sometimes it shows up as quiet frustration… or procrastination… or a lack of energy for things you know you care about.
I’ve seen the impact of misalignment countless times, both in my own life and in the lives of my clients.
It’s sneaky because it rarely announces itself with alarms and flashing lights.
Instead, it shows up subtly, as endless busywork… or procrastination… or as a lack of energy for things that you genuinely care about.
Yet, here’s the piece I remind myself (and my clients) of, over and over:
→ Alignment isn’t a box you check once. It’s a practice you return to again and again.
Some days, your head, your heart, and your hands are perfectly in sync. And you feel unstoppable.
Other days, they drift apart without you even noticing. And suddenly, you find yourself knee-deep in time-wasting tasks, while your bigger goals sit quietly in the background, waiting to take center stage.
And the cost?
You can feel stuck… frustrated… or even question your own capabilities — all while life still looks successful from the outside.
But there’s good news here!
Because if misalignment is the problem, then realignment is the solution.
Practionable Takeaway
Here’s the tweak I added to my Sunday ritual, to ensure I’m starting the new week fresh and aligned.
It’s an Alignment Check-In that includes three simple questions:
-
Did I spend my time this week on what matters most?
→ Not just the urgent stuff, but the meaningful work that moves me closer to my most important goals.
-
Were my actions connected to my deeper purpose?
→ Or was I getting lost in tasks that felt safe but ultimately small?
-
Where did I feel resistance, and what story might be underneath it?
→ Because resistance almost always has wisdom hiding inside it. But it's up to us to mine it.
This whole process takes me less than five minutes.
But it's become the difference between carrying quiet misalignment into another week… or stepping into Monday with fresh clarity and momentum.
If you’re feeling a little “off,” maybe give it a try.
Because sometimes, alignment isn’t about working harder. It’s about pausing long enough to see where you’ve drifted so you can gently guide yourself back on course.
If this idea of quiet misalignment resonates, and you’re curious about how to keep your thoughts, actions, and motivation working in sync, I’ve created a video that dives deeper into the science behind it.
It’s called “Why You’re Stuck (And How Self-Leadership Sets You Free).”
Inside, I share how the three pillars of self-leadership come together to help you stay aligned and create real momentum in your life and career. Plus, there’s a practionable exercise you can try right away.
